The NPA’s Chief Executive, John Turk and NPA Chairman, Paul Bennett met with key pharmacy stakeholders in Northern Ireland on Friday 13 June. The NPA’s CE and Chair met with Michael Guerin (Northern Ireland NPA Board Member), Paul McDonagh (UCA President), Terry Hannawin (Chief Executive PCC NI), Gerard Greene (Chair PCC NI), Donald Moore (UCA and PCC NI Treasurer) and Sheelin McKeagney (South LCG Chair) and discussed the challenges facing community pharmacists in Northern Ireland.

Although MURs have remained well below target; figures for the 2007/8 financial year reveal that MURs claimed for in Wales exceeded 60,000 and that this was an increase of 99% on 2006/7.

The NPA has produced a resource pack to help members manage and promote Medicines Use Reviews (MURs) to patients. The pack, available from NPA Sales, will give the pharmacists ideas on how the MUR service can work for them and help build a sustainable business model.

The NPA has reiterated its position on Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC) in response to an article in the Prescriber. The NPA in reply to the article (Vol 19 Issue 7 April 2008) stated that women should be able to obtain a combined oral contraceptive directly from a pharmacist.
